Cottage With Contemporary Flavor

Friday, March 14th, 2008 1,499 views

A traditional cottage plan loaded with eye-catching exterior elements and spiced with contemporary details, it makes for style on a modest lot and a comfortable budget.

Arched panes of glass both back and front strike a pleasing contrast to the steeply pitched roof line, and help fill the interior with light.

Breaking the line of the windows, a cantilevered front adds visual depth. A solid brick chimney, nearly corbeled at the top, offsets the roof peak.

And a railed porch beckons you inside, where the chimney opens to a wide brick hearth in the sloped-ceiling living room. At the far end, a dining area sits before the huge expanse of curved glass. Serving the dining room, an efficient U-shaped kitchen offers long counter space and rear access.

The master bedroom on the first floor is screened from family activities by a private hall, which also holds a full bath and two closets.

A central stair leads to two more bedrooms and a second full bath (the two baths economically share a plumbing core). Both bedrooms feature sloped ceiling to nine-and-a-half feet.

Raised In Splendor

Everything about this house speaks to a higher level, from the raised, wraparound porch to the soaring rooflines. The bay that projects into the covered porch also stretches accros the roof above.

First floor ceilings rise to a full 9′. There’s even a balcony that open to the sky off the second-floor front bedroom. And the floor planincludes a full atticlevel with window on three sides.

The unusual, off-centered entry into this spacious four-bedroom gives full play to the deep front bay that creates a sunny sitting area in the master bedroom. From the inside, the master suite is equally impressive, with its oversized closets and luxurious split bath.

Walls of window like those in the master bedroom are found in the foyer and again in the great room, where the bay naturally draws sitting arrangements. The house pivots on the massive central chimney, whoose fireplace warms the great room.

Revolving arround it: a neat L=shaped augmented with breakfast counter, more formal dining with another wall of glass that opens to the back deck, and a mudroom with half-bath and laundry area.

Three bright, spacious bedrooms and full bath circle the chimney and stairwell on the second floor.
